Vacuum Resin Treating Plant

Thanks to the vacuum, resin penetrates more easily and deeply the natural crack lines of stone thus causing the slabs to be better restored.

Vacuum resin-treated slabs get a better polishing since each single crack line, even the narrowest, is filled up with resin. Furthermore, cracks saturated with resin prevent any seepage of humidity entering from the floor.

Breton patented and realised the plants for the vacuum resin-treating by spreading the resin on the surface of marble slabs (without immersion in resin), and developed in its R&D Dept. both the formulation of the resins to be used and the parameters involved in the process.

Breton transfers the complete Know-How to operate the plant and use the resins to its customers, and trains their operators as well.
 
 

THE USAGE OF RESIN AND VACUUM IN THE STONE FIELD: BRETON’S UNIQUE EXPERIENCE

Through its Vacuumbreton and Bretonstone plants for the manufacturing of compound stone, Breton has been applying the vacuum and structural resin technology to the stone field since 1963.

In 1994 Breton was the first-ever company that realized an automated plant for the vacuum resin-treating of broken and/or cracked marble slabs by soaking them in resin (immersion in resin).

In 1997, Breton was the first to realize an automated plant without immersion in resin for the vacuum resin-treating of cracked marble and/or granite slabs.
In its well-equipped R&D Dept., Breton continuously studies and develops new solutions for the application of structural resins to natural marble and granite.

Nowadays, Breton’s know how has become a unique and enviable inheritance in the field.

THE VACUUMRESIN TREATMENT: A SUCCESSFUL TECHNOLOGY

Thanks to the vacuum, air goes out from the narrow crack lines of stone where resin penetrates more easily and deeply causing the slabs to be better restored. Vacuum resin-treated slabs get a better polishing since each single crack line, even the narrowest, is filled up with resin.

Cracks saturated with resin prevent any seepage of humidity entering from the floor. Breton patented and realized the plants for the vacuum resin-treating by spreading the resin on the surface of marble and/or granite slabs without the immersion in resin. Breton developed in its R&D department both the formulation of the resins to be used and the parameters involved in the process.

Breton has taught its operators and customers how to operate the plant and use the resins.

The fiber glass Net-Reinforcement of slabs

Slabs with many cracks can be net-reinforced on one face using a special net of fiber glass.

This operation is performed on a specially designed station of the resin-treating line. A special equipment allows to place automatically the net on the slab.

THE RESIN-TREATING WITH EPOXY AND/OR POLYESTER RESIN

Breton has developed the most suitable formulations of resin and analyzed all the parameters involved in the resin-treating process. After having been suitably mixed with additives according to the desired final characteristics (penetration degree, adhesion degree, color toning degree and preservation of the characteristics in the long run, UV-resistance, etc.), several types of resin were tested (epoxy, acrylic and polyester resins) and their advantages and disadvantages in terms of output and operating costs were crosschecked.

On request, Breton supplies the unit for the automatic preparation of the resin as well as the unit for the automatic spreading of resin on the slab surface.

The drying of slabs before resin treating

Different techniques for the slab drying were tested (static hot-air drying with air dehumidification, hot-air passage, irradiation passage, static radio-frequency, etc.) and their advantages and disadvantages in terms of output and operating costs were crosschecked.

Breton suggests the most suitable drying techniques according to the type of resin used, the material to be resin-treated (marble or granite) and the required production capacity. As for the static hot-air drying with air dehumidification, Breton developed special multi-decker vertical kilns ensuring a “homogeneous” drying of all the slabs housed in the kiln.

THE CATALYSIS OF RESIN TREATED SLABS

Depending on the requirements, slabs move along the automated resin-treating line while they are held up by special, rigid steel supports. Breton suggests the most suitable catalysis techniques according to the type of resin used, the material to be resin-treated (marble or granite) and the production capacity. As to the static catalysis of the resin-treated slabs, Breton developed special vertical multi-decker kilns with hot-air circulation which ensure an ideal catalysis of the slabs housed in the kiln.

The catalysis of marble slabs treated with polyester resin may also be performed in line, while they return to the loading point and move on a conveyor placed under the processing line along its longitudinal axis, with no need of kilns.
